Experience the summer’s major astronomical event in Cambrils
On 12 August 2026, one of the most significant astronomical events of recent decades will take place.
The last total eclipse visible from the Costa Dorada was on 30 August 1905, making this a unique opportunity for thousands of astronomy and photography enthusiasts.
What is a total solar eclipse?
An eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun, causing it to go dark for a few minutes.
During the eclipse, you can observe:
- A possible drop in temperature
- The horizon lit up like a 360° sunset
- The solar corona, which is normally invisible
- Stars and some planets
Cambrils lies within the path of totality, which will allow the eclipse to be observed in all its spectacular glory. The approximate times will be:
- 🌗 Start of the partial eclipse: 7.35 pm
- 🌑 Start of totality: 8.29 pm
- ⭐ Duration of totality: 1 minute
- ☀️ End of the eclipse: shortly before sunset
- 🌅 Sunset: 8.59 pm
Where can you watch the eclipse in Cambrils?
Buildings or trees may block your view of the entire eclipse. The beach is therefore one of the best options, as it offers a clear, unobstructed horizon from which to watch the eclipse without any problems. From our hotels in Cambrils, if you have a room with a sea view, you’ll be able to watch the eclipse from your room. From the Augustus apartments or the César Augustus hotel, we recommend heading down to the seafront promenade or sitting on the beach facing west.
In addition, Cambrils Town Council has announced an official viewing point in the area around the Cooperativa Agrícola de Cambrils, offering good visibility, nearby parking and a supply of approved eclipse glasses whilst stocks last. It will open its doors at 6.00 pm, and although entry is free, you must book a place in advance.
How can you watch the eclipse safely?
At our hotels in Cambrils, you’ll find two pairs of certified eclipse glasses, so our recommendation is:
- Use certified eclipse glasses (ISO 12312-2) whilst any part of the Sun is visible.
- It is only safe to look at the Sun without protection during totality; as soon as the Sun reappears, you must put the glasses back on.
Can I take photos of the solar eclipse with a mobile phone?
Yes, you can take good photos with a mobile phone, but you should bear in mind the following recommendations:
- Use a tripod to prevent the image from being blurred and to enjoy the eclipse without having to hold your mobile phone in your hand.
- During the partial phase of the eclipse (before and after), use a special solar filter for mobile phones; if you can’t find one, you can also wear approved solar eclipse glasses.
- During the total phase of the eclipse (total darkness), you don’t need to use a solar filter.
NOTE: If you do not use a filter during the partial phase, the sun will appear as a very bright, overexposed spot, with no detail.
IMPORTANT: To make sure you don’t miss the event whilst looking at your mobile, take a few photos before totality and during the first few seconds of totality.
